Commander, American Legion Col. Billie J. Holmes Memorial Post #331
Dear Legionnaires, Sons, Riders, Auxiliary Members, and Friends,
As we step into the heart of summer, I want to take a moment to say how truly grateful and honored I am to serve as your Commander. It means the world to me to be part of a Post as strong, caring, and united as Col. Billie J. Holmes Memorial Post #331.
Every time I walk through our doors, I’m reminded that we are more than a Post—we are a family. A family made up of individuals from all walks of life who’ve stepped up to serve, to support, and to build something bigger than ourselves. What we’ve created together here is something special, and I thank each of you for being a part of it.
My Journey to Service
I joined the Army a little later in life than most. At 26, I was a single mother of two young boys, working full-time as a nurse in Chicago. On the morning of September 11, 2001, I showed up for my shift just in time to see the second tower hit. That moment lit a fire in me—I knew I couldn’t wait around and hope for change. I had to be that change.
The very next day, I walked into a recruiting office, ready to do something meaningful. And while the Air Force told me I’d need to wait three years, I didn’t let that stop me. I joined the U.S. Army and never looked back.
During my 14 years of active duty, I served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other places where I supported the global war on terrorism. I retired as a Staff Sergeant in 2017, after an unforgettable chapter at Ft. Campbell, KY.
Service runs deep in my family. My great-uncles, grandfather, father, and husband all served. Now, both of our sons serve on active duty, continuing the tradition. My grandmother served in WWII as part of the Women’s Army Corps. And I was proud to be the next woman in the family to wear the uniform.
What Makes Post 331 So Special
I’ve visited many Posts over the years, and I can honestly say none feel like home the way this one does. The warmth, generosity, and can-do spirit that fills this place—it’s because of you. Whether you’re organizing an event, checking in on a fellow veteran, or showing up with a smile, your presence matters. And together, we’ve made Post 331 a place people want to be.
That’s why I ask—if something’s on your mind, share it. If you have an idea, bring it forward. We grow stronger with every voice, every hand, every heart that joins in.
Celebrating July Together
As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, let’s take a moment to remember why we serve and who we serve alongside. July is a time to celebrate our freedoms, honor our traditions, and show pride in our community.
We’ve got a lot happening this month:
🎆 Join us in the local 4th of July Parade – Whether you're walking or waving, come represent Post 331 with pride.
📆 Attend our Monthly Meeting – We’ll be planning upcoming events like our summer picnic, Dart tournament, Bingo, Treasure Hunt, and more.
☀️ Please check in on each other—especially our older veterans or those who may be alone during the hotter days. A small gesture can mean so much. Let's all remember to Be The One—the one who reaches out, listens, and makes a difference.
In Closing
Post 331 is only as strong as the people who call it home—and you are the heart of this Post. Thank you for the trust you’ve placed in me, for your continued service, and for the love you show to this community.
Let’s keep lifting each other up, honoring our mission, and walking forward—together.
With gratitude and respect,
For God and Country
Angel Marie Faulkner
